Lucky Ladd Farms-Fall Family Fun on the Farm
BY MELISSA BUCHANAN A favorite fun, fall activity to mark the change in seasons for many families is a visit to the pumpkin patch. Finding the perfect Local owners, Jason and Amy Ladd, have worked very hard to make this year’s Grand Opening of Lucky Ladd Farms an opportunity for families to get out and enjoy the fresh fall air on the farm, as the leaves begin their change into rich autumn reds and oranges. And although the farm requires full-time hours, somehow the couple manages to pull it off, while holding full-time jobs off the farm. Jason is the owner/operator of his own dump truck business, while Amy is the coordinator of a two-year USDA grant funded program at the University of Tennessee Center for Profitable Agriculture.
Despite contrasting backgrounds, the couple married and bought their first home and first barnyard friend, a pig, which eventually grew into a farm family of goats and sheep and led the couple to purchase a larger farm. What started out 2 years ago as opening their farm or birthday parties quickly progressed into hosting larger groups from area churches and mother’s day out programs. "From the very beginning we’ve been hooked," said Amy. "Seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they get to play with the animals for the first time is priceless; it doesn’t matter if they are 2 or 92, it just warms your heart," she said. "Adding the corn maze, pumpkin patch, and playgrounds, was just a natural progression." Lucky Ladd Farms is a working farm; with the Ladd’s selling show quality goats and sheep, including miniature silky fainting goats, one of which is "Tuffy", (a master champion and one of the top ten in his breed), and a rare breed of miniature sheep called Old English Baby doll Southdowns. The couple will also be selling baby chicks that will be hatching each week during the farm’s fall festivities.
And don’t forget the "cornless" maze! Lucky Ladd Farms has become the first in the state to plant a fun fall maze with Sorghum, which produces a taller, thicker stalk than that of traditional corn. With its long and winding trails, twists, and turns, there’s no view between the rows of the maze at all, since sorghum grows in much more denser than corn. For an added challenge, Lucky Ladd Farms opens its maze on select nights. Be sure to check the farm’s calendar for exact dates and times and don’t forget to bring a flashlight! Lucky Ladd Farms is now booking field trips, group tours, and other special events such as birthday parties. Whether it’s your church group, scout troop, company picnic, or family outing, make plans to spend the entire day at Lucky Ladd Farms! Tables and concessions are available on-site, while you are encouraged to bring your very own picnic. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:
