May 2006

The Eagleville 2005-2006 Sports banquet was held on Thursday may 11th in the New Gym. The evening started with chicken, beef and gravy, corn, beans, potatoes, rolls and salad, as well as an array of desserts.
When the meal was over the evening began with the golf awards presented by Mrs. Carla McElween the golf coach, she told us of this year having first girls team and her hopes that next year we would see more girls come out to play. Mrs. McElween was very proud that this year was the largest team yet with 10 boys, and 2 girls. Although it was a short season they managed to squeeze in 15 matches in 5 weeks.
Volleyball was next on the list of sports with a great season as well the Junior Varsity team finished up the year with a 13-2 record, and the Varsity team finished up the season with a 30-14 record. Deanna Lamb the head coach of the Eagleville girl’s volleyball team was also very proud of the teams over all GPA of 3.72. 2 of the seniors from this year’s team were awarded scholarships to Cumberland College, Ashley Bolden and Jessica Simms.

Coach Leeman gave out some awards as well Cara Nail who played with the team for 5 years received the MVP award, Brittany Beaty the Hustle Award, while Kayce Warf received the Highest Batting Average Award. The last award of the evening was presented in honor of a man who many of you knew John Redmond. When it came to his community and its school spirit John was always there cheering on an Eagleville team. Whether it was a home game or an away he always found his way there. I for one with miss him around town or at a game; his smile was always a welcomed sight. Mrs. Holden tonight started the John Redmond Memorial Award .This award is to be given out each year to someone in the community who showed the same hard work and support of our Eagleville Teams.
Let us all congratulate the award winners, and the player who showed up every day to practice and win or loss gave it there all to represent Eagleville High School.

Homegrown Players of the Week

Our first homegrown player of the week is Wesley Mize; if you have been to one of the Eagleville High School baseball home games you would have heard him announcing the players. Wesley is 18 years old and was born in Indianapolis Indiana; and now lives in the Rockvale Community, his parents are Dewayne Mize and Kenni Agee. Wesley attended Smyrna West and David Youree before starting at Eagleville in the 4TH grade. Wesley played football for 4 years, achieving the Special Teams players of the year award; he played basketball for 2 years while there he received the Free throw % leader of the year. He was also a member of the track team his 11 grade year. Wesley has a strong commitment to volunteering, which shows in his awarding of the Titans volunteer scholarship award. Some of the extracurricular actives he enjoys are announcing baseball games as well as Junior Varsity football game, and as a member of the student council. To better understand who Wesley Mize, is you have only to read his quote “To achieve you must believe; doubt is the thief of your dreams; never doubt yourself or your closest friends or team and you will succeed”. I asked Wesley what he plans to do after he graduates from Eagleville High School; he told me he plans to attend MTSU Radio/Television broadcasting.

Our second homegrown player of the week is Christopher Davenport; Chris was born in Grand Forks North Dakota. His parent’s names are Laura and Paul Davenport, and the grandchild of Neal and Ann Brown, and Dallas and Pat Burns. Christopher played football on the Eagleville Football team for 4 years. During the football banquet this year Chris was presented with the Offensive player of the Year, The Club Award “for playing through and enduring the pain of injury for the betterment of his team”. Chris was chosen as one of the Captains of this year’s football team as well. I asked a fellow team mate to describe Chris they told me this “Even though Chris was a senior he never made you feel like you were less important, he treats everyone with the same respect and friendship”. I asked Chris for a quote and in typical Chris fashion he said “Lets go left side” Chris will be graduating in May and after that will be heading off to the Military.

February 2006

Hello Sports Fans Welcome to February’s edition of the Talon Tidbit’s

The weather is wet these days but it’s not stopping all the Eagleville High School teams, from getting into shape and condition for the up coming spring season. Baseball, Softball, and Track & Field are just some of the sports to watch here at Talon Field. The Track& Field coach for the last 5 years has been Mrs. Caukin; we had a chance to speak with her about this year’s team. I asked Mrs. Caukin how this year team looked; she told me that they looked strong. This year Watch for Molly Burrows in the 300 Meter Hurdle, and the Pentathlon, we also have a new comer in the 400 Meter in Jake Simms. Next month look for the team Rooster and there schedule.

We also had a chance to speak with the Softball coach Mr. Chad Leeman, Who is back for another year; many of you may also know him from football. Coach Leeman hails from Gallatin, and played Baseball through his high school years, he then went on to coach softball in the Ponytail league for 5 years and has coach the Eagleville high school girls for 2 years. I asked Coach Leeman about the 2006 season, he expects good things from the returning girls as well as the new ones joining the team. The pitching staff has 2 returning Ashton Vaughn and Meagan Bennett and a Freshman Josie Lee. The teams tournament this year with be in Hendersonville March 31st -April 1st. Don’t forgot all you High School girls try-out for the softball team will be held February 13th, see Coach Leeman if you have any questions. We will have a full list of players as well as the schedule in March’s issue.

Make sure you check here monthly, for updates on all your favorite sports here at Talon Field.

Before we end this edition just a few reminders: all you parents of Eagleville High School football players the Football Banquet is February 11th in the new Gym, the cost of the tickets are 15 dollars and the money and numbers attending need to be turned in no later then the February 1st. Also if you have any sports news you would like to see in Talon Tidbits please send it in to Natvny@comcast.net or call 479-6784 and we will make sure we get it in. Enjoy the pictures of this years teams conditioning, and have a Sweet Valentines Day.

Hello Rocket Fans
I had a chance to meet with Coach Pflueger, if you all don’t know this he has been coaching the Middle School Baseball team since there first year in 1999. I sat down with the Coach Pflueger and got a bit of information on the 2006 season. Coach Pflueger was born and raised in Indiana; he played High School baseball as 1 year of College at Lincoln Trail in Illinois. Coming back for the second year as Assistant Coach is Mr. Homer Brown.

Right now the boys are in conditioning mod; full team practice starts the first of February. This year’s team has 19 players on the Rooster, 8 of which are returning from last year. I asked how the pitching looked; it looks good he told me we have new players with good arms. The season with Kick-off in Lascassas on February 11 with the County Jamboree, look for other county teams to be there including Eagleville, Kittrell and Rockvale. The Rockvale Baseball team is very excited about the new batting cages as well as the new pitching machine. Look to the March edition for the 2006 schedule and rooster. Lets all wish Rockvale a good season. Go Rockets.

January 2006

Welcome to a new year and, the January edition of the Talon Tidbits. I hope everyone had a pleasant holiday with family and friends. As promised I was able to interview the new baseball coach, Scott Courtney and we have the list of the Junior Pro teams from Rockvale.

First off the interview with Coach Courtney, so lets get started shall we. I asked the coach for a little background on himself, he’s from Decaturville Tennessee, and attended both UT Knoxville and MTSU colleges. He both majored in Nuclear Engineering and Math Education. Mr. Courtney is a teacher at the Eagleville High School, teaching both Math Foundations and Algebra II. Some of you football fans might know Coach Courtney from Coach Scharsch’s staff, but he was one of Coach Lynch’s assistants last year on the baseball team. We have 2 new additions to the baseball staff, Richard Bolden and Erik Hurter.

This year we have 10 returning players Ricky Brooksher ‘Senior’ Mac Jones, John David Proctor, John Jones, Chad Greene, ‘Juniors’ G.J. Strunk, Drew Gentry, James Blackwell, Hunter Marlin, Christopher Jutkofsky ‘Sophomores’. Although we had 10 seniors graduate last year, we still have some nice pitching talent in Blackwell, J Jones, Gentry and Strunk.

In the past the team has scheduled during the spring break an away tournament to Lenoir City, but this year the boys with be heading to Hixson High School for a weekend tournament.

I know everyone dreads fundraising time, but as you know with all sports it needs to be done to help the teams out financially. This year the team with be having 2 fund raisers, the first the gold cards similar to the ones the football team sold. Coach Courtney would also like to see at least 20 to 25 new banners added to the fences on the field, if you are interested in sponsoring a banner you can contact me here at Talon Tidbits Natvny@comcast.net or you can contact Coach Courtney at Eagleville High School for more details. We also want to let all you High School boys know that the team with start conditioning after Holiday break, don’t forget freshman there is a JV team that will need 14 players to fill out the rooster. Thank you Coach Courtney for your time.

Now on to Junior Pro basketball, Coach Chestnut over at Rockvale School was nice enough to get us a list of the Junior Pro players check it out under Rockvale Rockets sports. Spring sports are around the corner so make sure to look to us for all your spring sports news. Speaking of SPORTS NEWS please send any suggestions or sports worthy topics to me Lisa Jutkofsky at: Natvny@comcast.net would love to hear from you.

December 2005

Hello and welcome to December’s edition of Talon Tidbits. High School Football is now behind us and we have the last game of the season to cover as well as the Playoff game, so let’s get started. We also have a few notes for you on the upcoming baseball season.
The last game of the regular season was against the Nashville Christian Eagles. The game showed our boys in form, and no one in the stands left disappointed. To start us out in rushing was Charles Steagall with 66 yards; Charles has shown us some great things this year. Jacob Wilson 47 yards, and Steven Mastin for 38 yards, and a hand pull of team mates to give us a total of 162 rushing for the evening. Ricky Brooksher finished up the regular season with a good night total of 197 passing yards. On the top of the tackling list was Aaron Fisher with 7 tackles and 6 assists, Christopher Jutkofsky with 6 tackles and 5 assists, Shade Manning, Jo Jo Vestal, Tavarice Moore with 5 tackles and 4 assists each. Doug Brown had a nice 3 point kick, final score of the evening Eagleville Eagles 35 Nashville Christian Eagles 8. Let us not forget the second most important reason to come to a game the Eagleville Cheerleaders and the Eagleville band, great job.
This year we had many firsts, but the most important one to date was getting into the play offs. November 4th we played a game against the Collinwood Trojans. We lost the game to Collinwood 42 to 14, when I asked Coach Scharsch what he would say about this his answer to me was “ These boys have set the bar , nothing less than playoffs next year”.
This year we had a great group of seniors; Aaron Fisher, Rickey Brooksher, Josh Smith, Terry Poteete, Jacob Wilson, Chris Davenport, Ricardo Foster, Wesley Mize, and Charles Steagall. Lets all wish them a great future in what ever path they choose.
The last night of tailgating was a blast, a blast of cold that is. But the tailgating crew was on top of things, Hot chili with all the fixin’s , corn bread, and warm baked apples was on the menu and I don’t think anyone walked away hungry. Let’s thank the tailgating crew for a season of good eats. We should also recognize the hard work over at the concessions; Rhonda Gentry did a great job of running the show in there this season. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who came out each week, to help where ever they might be needed. This year you might have noticed a new face in the Eagleware booth, Lee Smith, Mr. Smith ran the booth for most of our home games as well as Middle School and some Junior Pro games. A special thanks goes out to the Eagleville Football Booster Club for all of their hard work this season!
Now we have a change of pace for all you baseball fans, a little birdie told me this year that the Eagleville Varsity Baseball team has 10 returning players. The team is slated to start practicing after the Holiday Break. The baseball team is planning to have 2 fund raisers this year, make sure you all come out and support them. I will keep you up to date as more baseball news becomes available.
In our next issue look for an interview with our new Varsity Baseball Coach Scott Courtney, and a list of the games for the 2006 season as well as pictures of the first practice. I would like to take a final moment to wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season, from us at Talon Tidbit’s.

NOVEMBER 2005

Welcome to Novembers edition of Talon Tidbits. We started this month with great anticipation, and disappointment was not to be had. The first game of the month was against the Cascade Champions, and what a game it was. Charles Steagall led the teams rushing with 154 yards, on 21 attempts. Rickey Brookshire was in form with his passing obtaining 79 yards on 11 attempts, and 5 completions, down field to catch these were Poteete for 3 Steagall for 1 and Wilson for 1. The Eagles defensive was working hard that evening. Topping the list of tacklers are JoJo Vestal with 15, Jeremy Moore 10 and Khendall Lillard with 8. The team as a whole had a total of 83 tackles for the evening. In the end the score told the story: Eagleville Eagles 27, Cascade Champions 19.

Homecoming week started with excitement and exhilaration for the fans of the Eagles. October 11th was the night of the bomb fire. We had a great showing with friends, family and fans a like showing up to celebrate the lighting of the fire and cheering on the team to hopes of victory in the upcoming game against the White House Patriots. The Friday night lights shone as we took the field in a need to win game. Tension was high but the players made it look easy as they took the field and never looked back. Rickey Brookshire passed for 342 yards on 15 completions and 24 attempts. On the catching end, Poteete caught 246 yards, Powell 36, Wilson 22, Mize 19, Moore 18. Doug Brown Kicked for a total of 4 points. Not to be over shadowed by the offense, the defensive came in with Vestal and Wilson leading the tacklers with 11 tackles each followed by a hand full of the line standing up and taking numbers. When the buzzer sounded for the last time that evening, there were 2 things we all knew the score, Eagleville Eagles 34 White house Patriots 20 and we had made the play offs.

While all this was taking place on the field, just off the field, the Talon Tailgaters were hard at work doing what they do best, cooking up a party! As part of home coming, the talented cooks that cater to Eagleville on Talon Field whipped up a Taste of Tuscany, complete with Chicken Parmesan, Baked Ziti, fresh Garlic Bread with Pesto, Caesar Salad and a very special Home Coming Cake. The dining area had been embellished with chairs, tablecloths, candles, and a large fall floral centerpiece. Even Eloise Eagle complimented the meal on both the professional presentation and the food's quality and taste as well.

Ricky Brookshire appeared on TV Monday night (Oct 17t, 2005 on WKRN - News 2) to accept the Tennessee Titan's Prep Player of the week award for his outstanding performance at Whitehouse. Presenting the award was Jeff Fisher, Head Coach of the Tennessee Titans. Congratulation Ricky!

Friday October 22, started out as any normal day for most of the 50 members of the Eagleville Eagles Varsity football team, but far from normal would the day end. My memories of the game will be driving through Eagleville watching the boys boarding the bus on their way to Chapel Hill, and the sounds of the cheers from the bus as it made its way through the center of town. When we think of rivalry we think of two sides in combat. What we normally don’t see is two teams…rivals yes, but not enemies. No matter what side you sat on that night, or color you wore blue or maroon what a game it was.

We need to mention the Offensive line that did a great job this week, Khendall Lillard, Scott Moss, Josh Smith, Aaron Fisher and Chris Davenport. We will all remember Jacob Wilson running for a touch down at one point carrying a player with him, and Ricardo’s catch, Charles injured but not out. For me my most prized memory was a sophomore named Jet who ran for all he was worth and made sure the Rockets didn’t score any more that night. Many will say the curse is broken; perhaps it wasn’t a curse but just time waiting for that special team, a group of boys and coaches putting it all on line for great night, between to two great teams. And if you need the score Eagleville Eagles 27 Chapel Hill Rockets 7

The Eagleville Football Booster has been hard at work running both the Concession Stand and the Eagleware Booth. Sales are look bold and in the black on both sides as they work towards their goal for the year. Of special note this month is the Limited Edition Custom Eagleware Jerseys. Modeled after pro jerseys, these shirts look like they could cost over a hundred dollars each…but they didn't. Only a select few were able to order their jerseys, each with a player's name and number on the back. Keep an eye out for them because they're sharp. If you want to order one, you'll have to wait until the Maroon and White game rolls around next summer! We should mention that the greatly anticipated Chili supper was canceled due to scheduling conflicts. We hope to host something similar either later this fall or during early spring of next year.

And now we move on to other sports. Yes, we have been talking about covering sports outside of football for quite some time. Well, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and it looks great! We have just received word from some Eagleville parents that want to help those other, less publicized teams get recognized. We're looking forward to pictures and full season write ups relating to both Volleyball and Golf in next month's issue.

"Our House Can't be Stopped." That's the phrase appearing on many shirts around Eagleville lately. The eagles are steamrolling through the competition, though it's not an easy fight. Their hard work has garnered the team the chance to host their first, and hopefully not the last play off game. After speaking with a number of different people, I have come to the conclusion that this year's Senior High team may very well have what it takes to end the season on the top of the football food chain. Go Eagles!
