The trip started out very eventful, as the Hawaii earthquake happened while we were in the air on our way. It caused a slight delay in our arrival, but no problems after that. Butch’s daughters and son-in-law also came over to see the race and Jesse didn’t let being 80 years old slow him down at all. He kept up with the young folks in all the activities including playing in the ocean waves like a 10 year old and hiking to waterfalls hundreds of feet high. The day of the race Jesse went along with the rest of the group to cheer Butch on at various spots along the race, walking about 5 miles that day. One of the favorite things was a two hour plane ride around the perimeter of the big island where he saw 1500 foot waterfalls, lava flowing into the ocean and many other interesting sites. He had fun snorkeling, the lava fields were amazing, and the sunsets were really beautiful. Being ever the gardener, he was amazed by the huge banyan trees and the lush vegetation in the rainforest. Jesse even got in a few Skip Bo games, even on the plane and at the beach. The trip finished up with a lu’au the last night at the beach in Kailua Kona. May 2006

  • Faye & Sam Wooten visit The Netherlands—"The Netherlands? Where's that?" That was the response we gave when our daughter, Sondra Warner, told use she, her husband Darrell and our grandson David were moving to The Netherlands and the response we heard more than once when telling others we were going to visit her there.
The Netherlands is a small country tucked into the northwest corner of Europe between Belgium, Germany and the North Sea. Sondra lives in a section of the country know as Holland in a city named Wassenaar. Ah, now you know which country we are talking about – windmills, wooden shoes, tulips and the boy with his finger in the dike.
The main motivation for our recent visit to The Netherlands was to spend time with our family, particularly our grandson David. The seven-hour time difference and very long travel time between Eagleville and Holland meant that we landed a day later than we took off. Getting use to “losing” a day, and a lot of sleep, wasn’t easy. However, visiting David and some of the sites definitely made it worthwhile.
While in The Netherlands, we visited Lisse, which is a short drive from the Dutch capital of Amsterdam. In Lisse we visited the famous Keukenhof Gardens where each spring literally millions of tulips and other bulb flowers bloom. It was a very chilly, windy day, but the beautiful colors and wonderful smells made us forget about the cold.
In the city of Haarlem, we toured the former home of Corrie Ten Boom. The Ten Boom family were devoted Christians who provided a "hiding place" during the Second World War for Jewish fugitives and those hunted by the Nazis.
The tour guide’s recount of the Ten Boom's devotion and bravery, which is also told in the book “The Hiding Place” and the movie by the same name, was truly inspiring. Finally, we visited a farm that made delicious Gouda cheese and those famous Dutch wooden shoes. We had a wonderful time in The Netherlands. It was exciting seeing the windmills, tulips, wooden shoes and dikes. However, we are ready for our family to get back to the United States. Those long overseas flights can be a little much.

  • The Ralston Sisters: Faye Hitchcock, Nancy Clower, and Rachel Cowart had an awi-inspiring Irish jaunt to Dublin, Kilarney, and Shannon.  Each summer we sisters take a vacation together to reminisce and count our many blessings. This particular trip was filled with Irish blessings. To mention a few, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College and Christ Church, the oldest church in Dublin. Our historian/story teller/tour guide gave up play-by-play history lessons and folklore. As we toured the Ring of Kerry, we saw vast countryside and seaside too beautiful for words. The serenity one feels while at the Cliffs of Moher is lingering and magical. It is there that we were drawn to the harp playing and singing of a young Irish lady. We learned that the harp is Ireland’s national symbol.
We delighted in a medieval dinner and performance at the Bunratty Castle, which was built in 1425. Next day, we enjoyed our day in Blarney, especially the Blarney Castle and shopping. We merried in lively Irish music and savored Irish coffee.
Rachel’s personal favorite was the visit to the sheep farm. The Rathbaum Farm had been in the family for generations. Their cottage was a dream, thatched roof, small rooms with low ceilings and “peat” burning in the fireplace. Mrs. Rathbaum served us a lovely lunch and Mr. Rathbaum sheered a sheep for us. The Australian sheepdog herded the sheep twice for us. Awesome! Rachel thought she was in heaven.
Needless to say, we fell in love with Ireland and long to go back.
